Lucy Thomas

Letter to Self

Dear Lucy,

All you have to do is make it through this year. Everything will be okay after that.

Emma

Day 7

Once again, I found myself surrounded by trash on the beach. At least there was champagne. I wasn’t even sure why I was there. I asked Max why he gave us the same instructions every morning, and all he would say was, “Trust me, the beach is the safest place for you gaggle of little shits.”

Auggie and Louis were both wearing gloves as they picked through separate piles of garbage a few feet apart from each other. Louis took stealthy hits from a vape pen as he half-heartedly collected the smallest pieces of debris. Auggie scowled at him. Their proximity to one another made me uncomfortable. There’s always an unspoken tension when the three of us are together.

Bradd was nowhere to be found this morning. Alison and Lucy were working together, laughing and talking, which was still weird.

I made an attempt to pick up some garbage, but it felt so meaningless that I couldn’t be bothered to continue; it would all be back tomorrow. I took a seat in the sand and tried to observe from a distance while I drank champagne, but it wasn’t long before Auggie stepped into my sunlight.

He gazed down at me with a half grin. “Why aren’t you helping us?” Auggie does this thing when he smiles that used to make me go a little berserk with lust: he lifts the corners of his mouth one at a time, left, then right. Hoo boy. It makes me feel like the first half of the grin is pure reflex, but the second half is a choice he’s making just for me.

He does it right now, but this time feels different. My penis! My penis! Vomit arching in a stream from his mouth like a garden fountain. His face all puffy, eyes swollen to slits. He looked like a fat, naked baby.

I took a swig of champagne. “Nothing matters, Auggie. Fuck the planet.”

He was shocked. “Don’t say that. Just because you hate volunteering—”

“Since when do I hate volunteering?”

He cocked his head and ran his fingers through his hair and smiled wryly, playing along, still flirty. “It’s okay, Emma, you can admit it. We all know that acts of service…the giving of oneself for the benefit of your fellow man…it isn’t really your thing.”

“That isn’t true at all. Remember when I organized that huge fundraiser for adult literacy?”

“I remember when you threw a party while your mom was in Hawaii. You made everyone chip in five dollars to cover the cost of a keg. I remember how so many people showed up that you made more than enough to cover the cost, so you got the idea to donate the rest to support adult literacy in order to put it on your college applications.”

“Right. That’s called a fundraiser. You just literally described a fundraiser.”

“Eh.” He wiggles his hand in a maybe, maybe not motion. “There needs to be prior intent for it to qualify as a fundraiser.
